Creating from the Web Form

What is an "Attribute"?

Attributes define the characteristics or qualities of your Google Base items. Each attribute consists of a name and one or more values (NAME OF ATTRIBUTE: VALUE OF ATTRIBUTE). For example, if someone were describing a recipe they want to share, they might use attributes such as "Theme: Breakfast," "Ingredients: Eggs," and "Chef: Rachel Ray."

Using well defined attributes that contain complete, relevant information is the best way to help users find your content. The more you use attributes to structure your content, the better we'll be able to match search queries to your items. However, you should only include the information that most accurately describes your item. Use of irrelevant or otherwise unrelated attributes may adversely affect your item's placement.

Can my item link to other sites?

Yes. You can link to web pages when you create an item from the web form or when you submit items in a bulk upload.

To link your items when submitting a bulk upload, you must include the "link" attribute. In addition, the URLs you provide must link directly to the most specific item page you have available for each item, as these pages include more detailed information. Please see our bulk uploading instructions for information on creating and submitting a bulk upload:

http://base.google.com/base/overview.html

If you are creating an item from the web form and would like to include a link to a web page, you will need to add the URL in a custom attribute. Please note that there are no restrictions on the name you select for this custom attribute, but it must be of type “Web URL.” Insert your URL in the attribute field. Once you've entered this information, the custom attribute and the URL you've included will appear as a link on the Google Base hosted item page.

How do I change an item's display name?

To change the display name for individual (non-bulk uploaded) items:

1) Click on the "edit" link next to the item's title.

2) Click "edit" next to the "Contact" section.

3) Change the display name and click "ok."

4) Click on the "Publish" button to confirm the changes. This new display name should appear in our search results within a few hours.

Please note that if you'd like to change the display name for bulk uploaded items you'll need to change your account's default display name.

How do I delete an item?

To delete your item, select the checkbox beside the item you'd like to delete, then click "Delete Forever." Please note that you won't be able to retrieve the item once you delete it.

If you're updating your items via bulk uploads, simply delete the item(s) from your bulk upload and submit the bulk upload again.

How do I add a picture?

To add a picture to your item, locate the "Pictures" section at the top of the page where you edit your item. You have two options:

1) To upload a picture from your computer, click the radio button beside "Add a file on my computer," and then click "Browse..." to locate the appropriate picture file on your computer.

2) To have Google Base download a picture at a web address, click the radio button beside "Add a picture on the web," and then enter the web address of your picture. Please enter a fully-qualified URL (example: http://yoursite.com/photo/ultimatesundate.jpg) that links directly to a picture, not an HTML page.

After you've specified the location of your image (either on your computer or on the web) click on the "Attach" button to send the image to Google Base.

How can I edit an item's location?

To change the location for individual (non-bulk uploaded) items:

1) Click on the "edit" link next to the item's title.

2) Click "edit" next to the "Location and delivery" section.

3) Change the item location and click "OK."

4) Click on the "Publish" button to confirm the changes.

This new item location should appear in our search results within a few hours.

Please note that if you'd like to change the location for bulk uploaded items you'll need to change your account's default location.

How do I edit my item?

After you publish your item, you may edit it at any time. To edit your item:

1) Log in to Google Base.

2) On the "Active items" page, click "edit" beside the item you'd like to change.

3) Once you've made your edits, you may preview or publish your item.

Please note that your item may be disabled temporarily while you're editing it. However, once you publish your item, your content will be visible to the public again.

What type of image formats do you accept?

The five common image formats that we accept are GIF, JPG (or JPEG), PNG, BMP, and TIF. Please also make sure the images you include illustrate the item you are posting.

What types of files can I attach to my items?

Text and publishing
Adobe PDF (.pdf), Microsoft Word (.doc), Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt) , Microsoft Excel (.xls), Text (.txt), HTML (.html), Rich Text Format (.rtf), ASCII, Unicode, XML, and Word Perfect documents (.wpd)
