Troubleshooting FTP Issues

How can I overwrite my bulk upload file?

Our FTP server does not support file overwriting at this time - our system must process your initial file before you can update it.

You may receive an error if you attempt to update a file immediately after uploading it, or if our system is temporarily unable to accept new bulk uploads. If the error persists after 48 hours, please contact us for assistance.

Why isn't my bulk upload appearing on the FTP server?

If your FTP program displays a "Transfer complete," "Upload successful," or similar message, we've received your bulk upload file. You'll only be able to see your file on our FTP servers immediately after uploading. Once our system begins to process the file it will no longer appear on our server.

I'm getting login errors when I try to upload my file via FTP. What can I do?

There are four common reasons that you might be having trouble connecting to the FTP server:

1. Your FTP account information has not become active

You may be unable to log in when attempting to connect too soon after creating or editing your FTP account information. It takes a couple of hours for new FTP account information to become active. We recommend either waiting a few hours after creating your FTP account or changing your FTP password.

2. You are not connecting to the correct FTP server

You should be connecting to "ftp://uploads.google.com" if you are using a browser to establish a connection. If you are using an FTP client, or command line prompt, you'll need to connect to "uploads.google.com" (without the "ftp://" protocol).

3. You are using an incorrect FTP username

You can check if you have the correct username name by signing in to your Google Base account. Once you're signed in, select the "Bulk upload files" tab.

You will see your FTP username displayed on right-hand side of the page.

4. You are using an incorrect FTP password

FTP passwords are not displayed in your account for security purposes. If you've lost your FTP password, you'll need to reset it. Learn how to reset your FTP password.

FTP errors

You can find a list of common FTP problems and their solutions in our FTP instructions. If this doesn't solve your problem here are a few things you can try:

Check the status of the server
Problems with our FTP server, though infrequent, may prevent you from uploading your file. Our support team documents these issues here.

If we have not recorded an issue with our server the problem is most likely due to user error.

Upload directly through Google Base
Most uploading problems can be solved by uploading your file through your Google Base account. If your file is over 20 megabytes, try registering multiple bulk uploads and uploading your items in separate files.

Choose another FTP upload option
We've provided instructions for FTP uploading using an FTP client, a web browser, or through DOS prompt. If you're experiencing difficult using one method, try another.

Consult other Google Base users
If your uploading problem isn't addressed above, ask a question in the Google Base Help Discussion Group. To get the most out the Help Group, try searching for a topic first; chances are someone has already touched upon the same topic and provided useful tips.

I'm getting a "Server not found" error

Be sure that you're connecting to the right FTP address. Our server is located at:

ftp://uploads.google.com

If you are using an FTP client, be sure to remove the "ftp://" protocol:

uploads.google.com

I've uploaded a file but it doesn't appear in my account

You'll only be able to see your bulk upload's status in your account once our system processes your file. This process generally takes a few hours; however, it may take up to 24 hours depending on the volume of bulk uploads we are receiving.

Also, please note that you must login to the correct Google Base site for the country you intend to submit a bulk upload for. For example, to upload a bulk upload file which includes items for sale in US dollars, you must login to the corresponding Google Base US site (as noted below). In addition, you will need to use these separate logins to view bulk uploads registered in your account for that country (i.e. you will not see a bulk upload file submitted to the US site while logged in to the UK site).
